ÜNYE ADLARI
OİNAİON - OUNİEH - ÜNİЁ

Araştırma : M. Ufuk MİSTEPE
(Araştırmacı - Orman Endüstri Yüksek Mühendisi)

Sevgili Ünyeliler,
Derleme çalışmamda, yabancıların kendi lisanlarında günümüze aktardıkları
Ünye'mizin eski adlarına ait farklı anlam ve farklı yerleşim yerleri
verileri ile haritalarını sizlere aktaracağım. Detay bilgilere ulaşmak isteyen
araştırmacılar ilgili linklere tıklamak suretiyle
Sinop -Tokat - Trabzon üçgeni
arasındaki diğer yerleşim birimlerine ait tarihî isimlere de kısmen ulaşabilirler.

Tüm Ünye sevgisiyle dolu araştırmacılara faydalı olması temennisiyle...

XIX.

http://www.unyehaberpostasi.com/#twoj_fragment1-3

Literatüre geçen ve artık kemikleşen bilgilere göre Ünye'nin eski adı Oinoe'den türetilmiştir. Prof. Dr. Bilge UMAR, "Türkiye'de Tarihsel Adlar" adlı çalışmasında Ünye isminin, İlk Çağ'daki adının Arrianos'un, Karadeniz kıyılarını anlatan yapıtında Oinoe şeklinde anıldığını belirtmektedir.

Doç. Dr. Necati Demir, bölgenin en az 5000 yıldır Türk yurdu olduğu, başka milletlerin ise sadece zaman zaman bazı yörelerine sahip olmalarından hareketle, Ünye isminin Türkçe kaynaklı olduğunu savunmuştur. Ünye'nin eski isimlerinden Honie, Onie, Omnie ve Homorie isimlerinin Hun Türkleri'nin mirası olduğunu tarihî kaynaklarıyla ve karşılaştırmalı örneklerle ifade eden uzun bir makale kaleme alarak, Ünye isminin menşeine alternatif bir bakış açısı getirmiştir. (Bkz.

"Οινόης" Οινόη adının -in hali. Karadeniz Rumcası'nda (Οίνος) İnos denilir. (Fonetik Destek : Paris Papageorgiou) - (160 Farklı Ünye Adı)

Tabula Peutingeriana

The Empire of Trebizond was already foreshadowed in 1080s by the exploits of Theodore Gabras, a local nobleman, received from Emperor Alexis Comnene the title of Duke of Chaldia and made a knightly career fighting the encroaching Turkish Beys. His son and grandson maintened virtually independent status until 1140. The limits of their fiefdom, defined by the fortress of
Oinaion (Unye) in the west, the southern outposts of Colonia (Şebinkarahisar) and Bayburt, and undefined zone beyond Rhizaion (Rize) in the Laz country, corresponded  exactly to the later frontiers of the Trebizond Empire.

The Folklore Museum was set up by the Pieria Pontic Association, and is housed in a building owned by the Association in Katerini town centre, near the Municipal Park. It opened in 1990, following efforts to collect folklore material still in the possession of refugee families from the Pontos who had settled in the Pieria region. The campaign had been carried out by a three-member committee under the supervision of Professors Dimitrios Pandermalis and Nora Skouteri.

The Museums of Macedonia

The reception room

The purpose of the museum is to preserve and promote the cultural wealth of the Black - Sea Greeks. It has some 600 objects of social, folkloric, and historical interest, some of which are extremely valuable. In the entrance hall there are a large map of the Black Sea, with the major centres marked, photographs of schools and village elders from the towns of Kotyora, Sohumi, and Kars, and refugees’ personal effects (books, embroidered fabrics, aprons).

The Museums of Macedonia

Traditional bedroom

The main part of the museum displays a reconstruction of the main parts of a Pontic house: the reception room with divans around a low round table, wall-hangings embroidered with the letters of the alphabet by the unmarried women, and icon-stands, and women’s costumes from Fatsa, Oenoe, and Trebizond. Next to this is the bedroom, with a bed, kilims, rugs, mats, the outfit of a newly-married woman from Kotyor, and other furniture. Then there is the kitchen with fireplace, table, cooking utensils, lamps, brazier. Lastly, a number of agricultural implements are displayed in a corner, together with a bench of tools of the comb-maker’s trade.

http://xena.lib.unimelb.edu.au/cgi/map_view.cgi#top

http://plato-dialogues.org/tools/loc/oenoe.htm
The name Oenoe comes from the Greek word oinos, meaning "wine". The village bordering Boeotia was the cause of a border conflict in the time of king Thymoetes of Athens and king Xanthus of Thebes. As the war was dragging with no end in sight, the adversaries decided to settle the matter by a single fight between their two kings.

ONİNİO - Forlani, Paolo; 1570 - Asia Minor

http://xena.lib.unimelb.edu.au/cgi/map_view.cgi#top

Alexios Comnenos, the founder of the strange and romantic Empire of Trebizond, was a son of Manuel and grandson of that resourceful adventurer, Andronikos I., who, after a series of hairbreadth escapes only possible in South-Eastern Europe, had occupied the Imperial throne, only to be murdered with the utmost savagery by the mob of Constantinople in 1185. His eldest son Manuel was blinded so brutally that he died, leaving two children, Alexios and David. Of their history between that time and the Latin conquest we know nothing. But in the same month of April in which Constantinople fell, Alexios, who had left the Imperial city for Georgia, set out thence at the head of a Georgian contingent provided by the active labour of his paternal aunt Thamar, and occupied Trebizond. The new ruler of that already famous city had much in his favour.

Bertius, Petrus 1618 Polemonion (Bolaman)

http://www.lib.unimelb.edu.au/collections/maps/walker/jpg/walker008.jpg

He was only twenty-two, he was shrewd, his family was popular on the Black Sea coast, whence it had originally come, and where it had left comparatively recent memories, for in 1182 his grandfather had resided at Oinaion, the modern Ünië, between Trebizond and Sinope. Those three places all declared for him, and while he remained cautiously in the neighbourhood of Trebizond, his dashing brother David, aided by a body of Georgians and native mercenaries, made himself master of all Paphlagonia, where was situated the ancestral castle of the Comneni at Kastamuni, and extended his power as far westward as Pontic Herakleia, the modern Erekli, well on the way to Constantinople, as “the herald and forerunner” of Alexios.

Ounieh (Enoë) - Garnier, F. A., 1862

http://www.davidrumsey.com/maps1290.html

But the two brothers were not free from dangerous neighbours, and even rivals of their own race. Besides the other Greek Empire, established by Theodore Laskaris at Nicæa, Samsûn, under the rule of Sabbas, formed an enclave in their territory, and interrupted its continuity on the Black Sea; “Mad Theodore” Mangkaphâs held Philadelphia; Mavrozomes felt himself secure on the Mænder by giving his daughter in marriage to Kai Khūsrū I., the Seljūk Sultan of Iconium, who was lord of the greater part of Asia Minor. From the distant Cilician kingdom of Armenia and the Armenian colony in the Troad Trebizond had nothing to fear. With Georgia Alexios was connected; but the treaty, under which the Latin conquerors of Constantinople had partitioned the Byzantine Empire, had assigned much of the new Trapezuntine territory—“Paphlagonia, Oinaion, and Sinope… with the appurtenances of Samsûn”—to the Latin Emperor.

BYZANTINE ODEON OF ANCIENT OENOE
Built in the first century AD, the Byzantine odeon located in the present day village of Kampos served as a central meeting place and forum for musical and theatrical events for the hierarchy of the ancient Ikarian capital
Oenoe. Oenoe was a prosperous city known throughout the ancient world for its viticulture.

http://www.sy-thetis.org/Thetis99/Trabzon/Trabzon.html#UNYE
Unye, the Greek
Oinaion, was the stronghold of Andronicos I Comnenos, the grandfather of Alexios and David, the founders of the Trapezun or Eastern Byzantine Empire. Andronicos, after the death of his cousin Emmanuel I Comnenos the Byzantine emperor, went back to Constantinople, murdered his nephew Alexios, married his teenage wife, Agnes the Frank, and became the emperor.

On a secondary scale are the rift valleys of the upper reaches of the Philabonites south of Kotyora; the valley of the thrice-named river which is a tributary of the Iris and starts as the Bag, continues south of
Oinaion as the Karakus and becomes in its upper reaches the Bakircik; and the valley of the river Amnias south of Sinope and Paurae.

Eunich, Martin R.M. Tallis, J.&F.

http://www.lib.unimelb.edu.au/collections/maps/walker/

The next port is Oinaion that is provided with a sheltered anchorage and a defensible headland, though the latter is less striking than the headland of Aminsos. The anchorage is shallow, barely adequate for the ships of medieval times, requiring them to anchor alongside a mole. A castle built by the Emperor Andronikos I near the shore in the most sheltered part if the bay serves as a balwark for the town. From Oinaion a road runs south across the mountains to Neokaisareia giving the port access to the plain of the Phaneroia and the Lykos valley, and southwest of the latter to Komana Pontika and the plain of the Dazimonites. About eight kilometers inland from Oinaion along this route is the castle of the Kaleoglu family; the castle serving to protect the city from attacks from inland and as a point of control for the inspection of caravans along this road. This castle has great age and has been rebuilt many times.

Eunieh - Mitchell, Samuel Augustus 1846

http://www.davidrumsey.com/maps1483.html

Eastward of Oinaion is the city of Polemonion. Here there is no natural anchorage, and other factors must have led King Polemo to place his capital at this point. The site is not naturally defended, but the town is built on a gravel terrace a few meters above sea level on the west bank of the delta of the river Boloman and it is possible that reasons of health may have partly dictated the choice of this site. The ancient city of Side is said to have preceded Polemonion. From Polemonion a Roman road ran southward across the mountains to the Lykos valley to join the great Roman highway across Anatolia from Nikomedeia to Satala, and there is also a route to Neokaisareia. These routes across the mountains are the primary reasons for the importance of Polemonion; further advantages to the site are the presence of ample fertile land in the immediate neighborhood and a good source of local limestone for building.

XIX. Yüzyılda Trabzon Vilâyeti ve Vilâyet Dahilindeki Yollar

The town straggles around a long, low spur, which serves for an acropolis. Apart from the fertility of the country around it, the city lies on a route northward across the mountains to Oinaion, while southward it is connected by a direct road to the Dazimonites. East of Neokaisareia, the Lykos flows in a deep narrow valley and through gorges which only widen out into small basins at Resadiye and Anniaca. At Anniaca a large castle rises on a hill spur above the valley; with a small village below.

In 1340 the Turks of Amis exploiting civil conflicts make 2 direct attacks to Trebizond. The second one is successful. The city was burned and many non-combatants died. Exploiting civil conflicts the Turks capture the territories of Hagion Andrea and

These are the memoirs of Andronicus Comnenus, currently Governor of Pontus, formerly Governor of Cilicia and Duke of Belgrade and Branicevo, and (less loftily) for many years the most distinguished resident of our Empire's most terrible dungeon, the Prison of Anemas. I am the grandson of the Emperor Alexius I Comnenus, the nephew of the Emperor John I Comnenus, and the first cousin of the reigning Emperor Manuel I Comnenus. I am now in the sixty-third year of what everyone would agree has been an adventurous life. (My enemies – including my cousin Manuel, I suspect -- would add "reckless and dissolute" to that description, but I shall leave you to judge that for yourself.)

Oenoe (Oinoi) - Cave of Pan
The cave of Pan is located 3 km NE of the village of Marathon. It was the home of a small group of farmers in the Late and Final Neolithic periods (5300-3200 BC). It was used as a dwelling during the Bronze Age too (3rd millennium BC), as well as for burials.
The finds from historical times indicate the worship of Pan, the Nymphs, the Muses, the Graces and Apollo here (6th-2nd century BC), as well as its use by Christians. Close by are the ruins of a large country villa with cultivable fields all around and a tower in which the produce was stored. The Pythion, sanctuary of Apollo, which is identified with the large rectangular building near the Medieval tower of Oinoi, belonged to the ancient deme of
Oenoe. In the form of a peristyle with marble pillars in which couches were fixed, it was perhaps donated by Herodes Atticus.

Meanwhile the army of the Peloponnesians was advancing. The first town they came to in Attica was Oenoe, where they to enter the country. Sitting down before it, they prepared to assault the wall with engines and otherwise. Oenoe, standing upon the Athenian and Boeotian border, was of course a walled town, and was used as a fortress by the Athenians in time of war. So the Peloponnesians prepared for their assault, and wasted some valuable time before the place. This delay brought the gravest censure upon Archidamus.

Even during the levying of the war he had credit for weakness and Athenian sympathies by the half measures he had advocated; and after the army had assembled he had further injured himself in public estimation by his loitering at the Isthmus and the slowness with which the rest of the march had been conducted. But all this was as nothing to the delay at Oenoe.

During this interval the Athenians were carrying in their property; and it was the belief of the Peloponnesians that a quick advance would have found everything still out, had it not been for his procrastination. Such was the feeling of the army towards Archidamus during the siege. But he, it is said, expected that the Athenians would shrink from letting their land be wasted, and would make their submission while it was still uninjured; and this was why he waited. But after he had assaulted Oenoe, and every possible attempt to take it had failed, as no herald came from Athens, he at last broke up his camp and invaded Attica.

Oenoe : A Naiad. Mother of Sicinus who renamed the island Oenoe one of the Cyclades and called it Sicinus after himself.
Oenone : Daughter of the River God Cebren. Oenone had learned from Rhea the art of prophecy, and warned Paris no to sail to fetch Helen; but failing to persuade him, she told him to come to her if he were wounded, for she alone could heal him. When he had carried off Helen from Sparta and Troy was besieged, he was shot by Philoctetes with the bow of Heracles, and went back to Oenone on Mount Ida. But she, nursing her grievance, refused to heal him. Some say that afterwards she repented for not healing Paris and hanged herself when she found him dead, but others say that after having repented for not healing him she leapt onto his funeral pyre and burned to death. Paris & Oenone had a child Corythus who came to Troy to help the Trojans, and there fell in love with Helen. But Paris, having detected him and his aims concerning Helen, killed him. However others say that Corythus was the son of Paris & Helen.

Thus in the market-place at Athens the stoa poikile (Painted Colonnade) was decorated with Polygnotus's representations of the destruction of Troy, the fight of the Athenians with the Amazons, and the battles of Marathon and Oenoe. Although Diomedes 2 married an Argive woman, daughter or granddaughter of Adrastus 1, he still kept an eye on Calydonian politics, punishing the usurpers that deposed his grandfather Oeneus 2, king of Calydon. Behind this conspiracy were the sons of Agrius 3 (brother of Oeneus 2 and the man who had banished Tydeus 2), who put their own father on the throne and Oeneus 2 in jail.

Diomedes 2 then, being helped by Alcmaeon 1 (one of the EPIGONI), attacked Calydon and punished the plotters by slaying most of them, except perhaps Onchestus 1 and Thersites, who escaped to Peloponnesus, and Agrius 3, who killed himself. Now Diomedes 2 did not restore Oeneus 2 to power to, since he was too old, but gave the government to the latter's son-in-law, Andraemon 1 (married to Gorge 2). Diomedes 2 then took Oeneus 2 to Argos; but when they were in Arcadia, Onchestus 1 and Thersites lay in wait for the old man and killed him. Apparently all what Diomedes 2 could do was to bring the corpse to Argos, where Oeneus 2 was buried in a place called Oenoe after him.

III. THE CERYNITIAN HIND (site: roamed around the territory of Oenoe in north-west Argos) : This deer was sacred to Artemis. Herakles chased it for a year, and finally ran it down in Arcadia, beside the River Ladon in northwest Arcadia [Remember: Ladon is the name of the Serpent that guards the Apples of the Hesperides, and is thus a death-symbol, like the Dragon that guards the Golden Fleece). Herakles caught the Cerynitian hind in nets and brought it back alive to Eurystheus; it was then released.

When Hesiod heard this oracle, he kept away from the Peloponnesus, supposing that the god meant the Nemea there; and coming to Oenoe in Locris, he stayed with Amphiphanes and Ganyetor the sons of Phegeus, thus unconsciously fulfilling the oracle; for all that region was called the sacred place of Nemean Zeus.  He continued to stay a somewhat long time at Oenoe, until the young men, suspecting Hesiod of seducing their sister, killed him and cast his body into the sea which separates Achaea and Locris.  On the third day, however, his body was brought to land by dolphins while some local feast of Ariadne was being held.

Upon this revolution taking place, the party of Pisander and Alexicles and the chiefs of the oligarchs immediately withdrew to Decelea, with the single exception of Aristarchus, one of the generals, who hastily took some of the most barbarian of the archers and marched to Oenoe. This was a fort of the Athenians upon the Boeotian border, at that moment besieged by the Corinthians, irritated by the loss of a party returning from Decelea, who had been cut off by the garrison. The Corinthians had volunteered for this service, and had called upon the Boeotians to assist them. After communicating with them, Aristarchus deceived the garrison in Oenoe by telling them that their countrymen in the city had compounded with the Lacedæmonians, and that one of the terms of the capitulation was that they must surrender the place to the Boeotians. The garrison believed him as he was general, and besides knew nothing of what had occurred owing to the siege, and so evacuated the fort under truce. In this way the Boeotians gained possession of Oenoe, and the oligarchy and the troubles at Athens ended.

MARATHON, a plain on the N.E. coast of Attica, divided from the plain of Athens by the range of Pentelicus; it contained four villagesMarathon, Probalinthos, Tricorythos and Oenoe which originally formed an independent tetrapolis and in historical times still upheld peculiar rites and legendary associations, chiefly connected with Heracles and Theseus. In the 6th century B.c. it served as a base for Peisistratus (q.v.), who owned much property in that district, for securing the rest of Attica.

A s scientists tell us, viticulture started somewhere in Greece between 5000-4000 BC. The oldest winery discovered anywhere in the world is at Archanes in Crete. In the Homeric epics we can find descriptions of many cities or regions in Greece with adjectives that testify their tradition in the production of wine such as "the vine-covered Epidaurus". Another element would be the etymology of the names of many cities and places such as Oenofyta, Oenoe, Oenotria (Oenos in Greek means wine).

Thucydides recorded, for example, the following battles in the first year of the war: an unsuccessful Spartan attack on Oenoe, a fortified border post; defeat of an Athenian cavalry detachment at Rheiti, near Eleusis; a minor cavalry engagement at Phrygia between the Athenians, with Thessalian support, and Boeotians; fighting by the Athenian fleet at Methone, Pheia, Thronium, Alope, Sollium, and Astacus; actions against the Chalcidians and Potidaeans in the north; and an expedition Pericles led against Megara. Thucydides describes the following years of the war in similar detail, giving a battle by battle account. It might just be possible to match the Dêmosion Sêma remains with casualties from one or more of the battles of which he writes.

Twelve kilometers outside the cosmopolitan Loutraki is lied the historical village of Perahora, well known for its wine production. In antiquity, it was called “Peraea” and there are a lot of archaeological finds – the ruins of ancient Oenoe (Schinos) and the tombs of Peraea – that confirm its existence since the prehistoric era. Though, the most important finds are located in the Heraion. There are ancient sites and the temple of the goddess Hera. Magnificent finds were also brought in light in this area such as ruins of temples, samples of ceramic art, silver and golden coins, copper tools, plenty of seals as well as road traces, fountains and tanks that indicate the existence of a well developed water collective system.

The answer, I think, is twofold. Two years before the siege of Plataea, Archidamus tried to take the Athenian border fort of Oenoe "with machines and in every other way," as our source Thucydides says, so he must have tried to storm it in the ways I've described, and of course he used siege engines there as well. All his attacks failed, for whatever reason. Now he was at Plataea, a less assailable site than Oenoe if the location proposed for the latter is correct, so it would not be surprising if he was reluctant to repeat himself. In addition, the Plataeans may have rendered their city more than usually impervious to such methods by walling shut their gates (480 men are not going to go out against 30,000) and building their walls in the assailable portion too high for ladders to be practical--over 30 feet high, according to later authors.

Unieh - Johnston, Alexander Keith, 1801

The Spartans and their allies continued building their mound, but now also brought up siege engines against the city. One engine was moved forward over the mound and shook down a great part of the high wall, terrifying the Plataeans, while others were brought to bear at different parts of the wall. As we said above, we presume Archidamus held his machines back until now because they had failed at Oenoe two years before.

The hind of Ceryneia: At Oenoe, near the Hill of Ceryneia, a gigantic hind as destroying crops; she was sacred to Artemis, and it was a sacrilege to touch her. Hercules hunted for one entire year, when finding her he wounded her slightly with his arrow and carried her across his shoulders. As he crossed Arcadia he met Artemis and Apollo, who wanted the hind back and accused him of intending to kill a sacred animal. But Hercules extricated himself by saying the affair was the responsibility of Eurystheus, for he was only acting on the king's commands.
